Alternatives & comparison
How KnowWhy compares.
Teams already have ways to answer “why did we do this?”. Here is where each one works well, what KnowWhy does differently, and when KnowWhy isn't the right choice.
KnowWhy in one paragraph
KnowWhy is an AI knowledge base for software and product teams. It connects GitHub, Slack and Notion and answers questions such as “why did we make this decision?” or “what shipped last week?” with citations to the original commit, pull request, Slack thread or Notion page.
- Connects GitHub, Slack and Notion with read-only, least-privilege permissions
- Admins choose every repository, channel and page that gets indexed
- Every claim in an answer cites its source; unmapped citations are removed
- Says so when the sources don't contain an answer
- Organizations isolated with PostgreSQL row-level security
- Integration tokens encrypted with AES-256-GCM; Slack DMs never read
The alternatives
Six ways teams find the reasoning behind a decision.
We compare approaches rather than named products. Other tools change quickly, so check each vendor's current documentation for what it supports today.
Searching each tool on its own
- Works well when
- You already know which tool holds the answer and roughly when it happened.
- What KnowWhy does differently
- One question covers GitHub, Slack and Notion together, and you get a written answer with citations instead of a list of results to read through.
Asking the person who remembers
- Works well when
- They're around, they remember, and it's a quick question.
- What KnowWhy does differently
- Nobody gets interrupted, and the answer points to the record itself. When the reasoning was never written anywhere, KnowWhy says so rather than filling the gap.
Writing decisions down in a wiki or decision records
- Works well when
- Always worth doing. A clear decision record is the best source there is.
- What KnowWhy does differently
- KnowWhy complements it: it indexes decision records in Notion, and also finds the reasoning that never made it into a doc, in pull requests and Slack threads.
Pasting excerpts into a general-purpose AI chat
- Works well when
- A one-off question about material you already have in front of you.
- What KnowWhy does differently
- Someone has to find the right excerpts first, and access rules don't travel with copied text. KnowWhy retrieves from indexed sources the asker is allowed to see.
Building your own retrieval (RAG) pipeline
- Works well when
- You need full control, unusual data sources or a custom interface.
- What KnowWhy does differently
- KnowWhy already handles OAuth connections, incremental sync, edits and deletions, source-level access control, encrypted credentials and citation checking.
Broad enterprise search or workplace assistant products
- Works well when
- You need many connectors today, well beyond engineering and product tools.
- What KnowWhy does differently
- KnowWhy is deliberately narrow: three integrations today, focused on why technical and product decisions were made and what shipped.
Honest limits
When KnowWhy isn't the right fit.
- You need sources beyond GitHub, Slack and Notion today. GitLab, Jira, Linear, Confluence and others are planned, not available yet.
- You want to search source code. KnowWhy indexes commits, pull requests, reviews and issues, not code files.
- You want to ask questions from inside Slack. Questions are asked in the KnowWhy web app.
- You need meeting recordings or transcripts indexed. That's on the roadmap; notes captured in Notion or Slack work today.
- You need more than the free plan's 300 questions a month on a self-serve paid plan. Paid plans are coming soon; contact us for higher limits.

FAQ
Comparing options
Is KnowWhy an enterprise search tool?
It's an AI knowledge base, sometimes called an internal knowledge assistant, focused on engineering and product work. Instead of returning a list of matching documents, it writes an answer from GitHub, Slack and Notion and cites every source it used.
How is KnowWhy different from searching Slack, GitHub and Notion separately?
One question covers all three, so an answer can connect the Slack discussion, the pull request and the Notion write-up behind a decision. Each claim links back to the original, so you can check it.
Does KnowWhy replace our documentation?
No. It reads the documentation you already have in Notion, plus the reasoning in pull requests and Slack threads that never became a doc. Good decision records make its answers better.
How much does KnowWhy cost?
There is a free plan with 300 questions a month, up to 10 members and GitHub, Slack and Notion included. Larger teams can contact us for the Team and Enterprise plans.
